Dubai Summer Festival
The Dubai Summer Festival opens Friday July 16 at Newbury Racecourse with thoroughbred racing on the 16th and 17th.
Friday's feature is the £25,000 Rose Bowl (Class 1) (Listed), 6f for two-year olds.
Saturday features the £200,000 Weatherbys Super Sprint (Class 2), 5f for two-year olds.
Trainer Richard Hannon has entered six or more horses (before final declaration) in the sprint and is expected to win since he seems unstopable this season.
The Festival weekend will conclude Sunday, July 18, with the Dubai International Arabian Race Day (DIARD) which is sponsored by the Dubai Summer Festival Committe and offers free entry to the racecourse with major Group races under Rules for some of the world's finest Arabian race horses.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum is the founding Patron.
See Pure Bred Arabians 2009 for a taste of 2010's DIARD potential.
UPDATE Friday: Godolphin's Al Aasifh IRE (Invincible Spirit IRE) won the Rose Bowl. Frankie Dettori rode his handsome colt to a 1/2 length victory over Richard Hannon's Cape De Rio (Captain Rio) with Ryan Moore on board.
Since trainer Saeed bin Suroor has been found guilty by the British Horseracing Authority of using a banned substance for the third time in a year, all his horses will be tested for the next year.
Chabal's victory in the Bet365 Classic Trial on April 20 has been revoked.
UPDATE SATURDAY:
Shock of the day! Richard Hannon's horses only won two of the seven races and not the big race.
In fact, none of his six entires placed higher than tenth in the Weatherbys Super Sprint for two-year olds, 5f on Turf.
After only one winning start in his juvenile career, Temple Meads (Avonbridge) lived up to expectations as favourite by cutting down the side of the course to engage the early leader Bold Bidder (Indesatchel IRE)
in the final furlong and passing him to win by 1 length with consumate professionalism.
Jockey Richard Mullen said TM is a mature colt for his age and tempermentally solid.
Though he had problems which kept him from Royal Ascot, his trainer Ed McMahon had him spot on today.
He is a credit to his sire and breeder Whitsbury Manor Stud.
Any big bidders for the colt who only cost owner John Fretwell £16,000?

Traditionally, the first race of the Dubai World Cup day has always been for Pure Bred Arabian horses in the Dubai Kahayla Classic (Group 1)sponsored be Emaar with a purse of US$250,000, 2000m (10f) on the inner All-Weather course of Dubai's new Meydan Racecourse.
Despite disappointment at the late withdrawal of the formidable mare Mizzna FR, the race produced a brilliant talent in Jaafer (Amer) who came from behind to defeat the accomplished No Risk Al Maury FR (Kesberoy FR) owned by HH Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum by five lengths in the final furlong.
The jaunty seven-year-old grey horse Jaafer was bred in Great Britain, trained by Britain's Julian Smart, ridden by Andre De Vries for his owner Sheikh Khalifa bin Mohd bin Khalifa Al Thani of Qatar.
De Vries commented that Jaafer "was a different class."
Indeed Jaafer proved to be a worthy example of his Arabian breed to symbolically launch the first DWC race card at the new Meydan Racecourse.
